Study Introductory Lighting Series

This series of three bridging course units is designed as an introduction to the scientific basics of lighting and is considered essential knowledge for embarking on the post-graduate lighting program. The units (or their equivalent) are compulsory for people currently working in the lighting industry, but have had limited or no tertiary background in mathematics or science.

ILS-1 covers the necessary mathematical concepts for lighting, while ILS-2 looks at the basic science behind the production of light, and how it can travel through materials and space (optics). Finally ILS-3 covers the basics of electricity needed to understand how lamps work and are controlled. More detail of the material covered in ILS-1, ILS-2 and ILS-3 can be found below.

Note: students who can show proof of previous studies in any of these areas (e.g. electricity and electronics through an electronic engineering program) can be exempted from that ILS module.

ILS-1, ILS-2 and ILS-3 are CPD (Continuing Professional Development) courses run by the School of Physical & Chemical Sciences at QUT. Students can register for these courses through the School. (See below).

The ILS modules can only be taken on-line through QUT's Wiki space. It is available in early May and must be completed by mid-June for entry into the Graduate Certificate program which commences in July. Admission to the site is obtained on return of the application form with payment.

Each module includes an on-line assessment test which participants must pass before they are deemed to have successfully completed each module.

The successful completion (including credits given) of the three ILS units, coupled with other verified tertiary experience or demonstrated experience (minimum 3 years) in the lighting industry, will be sufficient qualification for entry into PH62 Graduate Certificate in Lighting at QUT, or PH63 Graduate Certificate in Lighting (PDF) at City University of Hong Kong.

Note: students who must do the ILS (entering with limited tertiary experience) can only enrol in the Graduate Certificate course, and must successfully complete all four units of the Graduate Certificate before they can progress to the Graduate Diploma and/or the Masters of Lighting. Students entering with an undergraduate degree can enrol directly into the Graduate Diploma or Masters program.

To apply for the ILS program, a registration form (PDF) and payment form (PDF) must be down-loaded, filled out and returned to Lighting Administration Officer of the School of Physical & Chemical Sciences.

The charges for each of the ILS units studied through QUT is as follows:

ILS-1: Introductory Mathematics for Lighting $30
ILS-2: Introductory Science for Lighting $55
ILS-3: Introductory Electricity for Lighting $55

Payment can be made by cash, cheque or credit card.
